Can design ever be sustainable and ethically 'good' in the Uk capitalist society

-

Looking into the theory behind sustainability of the world and what it means to be a fully sustainable society. Sustainability, meaning not just recycled paper and less energy used, but design that gives back and is deemed worth-while.

View this alongside what is design for 'good'?.
Good design: charity, educational design for children in school, instructions for NHS equipment, etc. NOT BRANDING.

Both of these points placed into todays capitalist climate, investigating if sustainable and good design can ever exist. Considering if if would exist under a communist society.
Looking into the whole world and seeing if it exists already somewhere outside of the UK.

I intend to take a sociological and Marxist influence, looking at how companies that claim to be 'good' by being sustainable and ethical, work within a Capitalist society. Researching into other countries government and seeing if it is possible there for design to exist without causing harm.

Is sustainability happening, or is it just a way of selling a product or design work.

Looking in depth at theorist Papanek and applying it to todays studios and working ethos of everyone out for themselves. Also with a strong influence on L.Roberts book defining what good design is and where it can exist, if anywhere.

I have a personal interest in sustainability of the world and design that evokes social change for the good. I am interested in current affairs and would like to investigate if this good design could ever exist with our way of life. I would like to further understand what sustainable and ethical actually mean when companies talk about it.
I believe as a designer and as someone simply on earth living it is my responsibility to understand the damage I may be doing to the earth, and if there is ever a good reason behind design. Does the good outweigh the bad.

I have dyslexia and dyspraxia, I found out this year. I find spelling hard and it takes me longer than others to read. I usually have to do a lot of drafts before my work is markable.

Also I need to think about what companies and studios my essay will be based on.
